Apple has published the Beta iOS 18.4 version to developers, which includes a small but useful change for Carplay. The update now allows Carplay to display a third line of icons on larger infotainment screens, such as the 14 -inch display in certain Toyota Tundra models. This modification allows users to quickly access more applications without slipping between the pages.
However, vehicles with smaller screens, such as 9 -inch display in a Honda Civic, will always display the two standard rows of four icons. Although this update may seem minor, it is an improvement in the welcome quality of life for the mirror system of the Apple phone, because it benefits from the additional screen space available in certain vehicles. The addition of a third row of icons reduces the need of drivers to navigate several menus, ultimately minimizing distractions on the road.
The new carplay icons improve the functionality
This update is particularly beneficial for those who frequently use Carplay during long disks and count for entertainment and navigation in cars. IOS 18.4 is currently in beta and should be released to the public in early April.
As the update progresses in the beta phase, users hope for more improvements in Carplay, such as a wider implementation of wireless connectivity and the potential for Apple to produce its own wireless adapters. Although this update is appreciated, many users are still looking forward to the release of Carplay 2, which was initially promised for 2024. Carplay 2 aims to offer greater integration with the vehicle system for a more transparent user experience.
In January 2025, there was no sign of this new generation car, and the original calendar seems to have been delayed. Apple continues to collaborate with several car manufacturers on the updated system, and more details on the future of Apple Carplay and the potential launch of Carplay 2 could be revealed during the next large showcase of Apple software, which should take place in June.
