HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Looking for heart-warming comfort food on Oahu?
Mobile catering company Mary’s Girl in the Kitchen specializes in Southern-style dishes and will be serving its signature oxtails, ribs, shrimp and grits, wings and more at the Juneteenth Block Party in Waikiki this Wednesday.
Owner and military veteran Nekishia Cole joined HNN’s Sunrise to talk about the business she started in 2022, inspired by her mother Maryann with recipes passed down from her ancestors. She says her menu is a tribute to the legacy of their ancestors, bringing people together through the power of comfort food. She seduces fans with her sincere and tasty dishes.
“Growing up in Florida, we didn’t have much, but one of the things you did get was food,” Cole said. “This is how my mother and grandmothers showed their love.”
Cole says she creates dishes that not only satisfy the appetite but also warm the soul, and strives to create unforgettable dining experiences that celebrate the rich tapestry of cultural heritage and the joy of good food.
You can find Mary’s Girl in the Kitchen at What the Truck? food festival at the Waikele Center every first and third Friday and various markets and events around the island. Cole also offers catering services.
