DENVER (KDVR) — The Denver Police Department has a suspect in custody after shots fired were reported near 18th Street and Curtis Street Monday morning.
The gunshots were heard around 10 a.m. Shortly afterward, police closed a one-block radius in the 1700 block of Curtis Street and announced a shelter-in-place order.
FOX31 was on scene where police cordoned off the area. Police were continually arriving, including SWAT, the Criminal Negotiation Team and others.
Meanwhile, Denver police said on social media that officers were working to contact the suspect “who may be involved in the shooting incident” and “may be barricaded in the area.”
Some people nearby feared the situation would get worse. Officers asked people to move quickly, saying they were in danger outside the building.
“It’s scary. It’s scary,” Denver resident Raymond Sisneros told FOX31.
People living in the building told FOX31 the gunshots were heard on the 14th floor.
“I heard gunshots. Repeated gunshots, then gunshots again,” said an America Vail resident.
Three hours after sheltering in place, Denver police announced a suspect was in custody “after deploying less-lethal equipment, which may have sounded like gunshots.”
The 39-year-old suspect was arrested for unlawful discharge of a firearm and inadvertent endangerment.
All of this was happening within a block of the 16th Street Mall. Some visitors were alarmed.
“I’m going to walk my wife safely to the convention and when she leaves, I’m going to pick her up,” said Bobby Spencer, a Louisiana resident.
Police tweeted that no injuries were reported and that they were working to clear the scene and reopen the roads.
