As Pride Month draws to a close, cities across the United States are gearing up for the final, vibrant celebrations that mark the annual month of LGBTQIA+ celebration. This weekend, the month of June will be kicking off in style with a host of highly anticipated parades that will draw marchers and spectators to communities large and small.
Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York, where the protests that followed were attributed to a shift in LGBTQ+ activism in the United States. The birthplace of Pride as we know it, New York hosts one of the largest and most iconic celebrations and marches each year. .
This year’s theme is “Reflect. Empower. Unite,” according to organizers. “The theme was chosen to highlight the importance of New York City Pride as a hub of queer liberation and joy,” Heritage of Pride said.
“Drawing on the activist history that sparked the LGBTQIA+ rights movement, the theme encourages individuals, advocates, community leaders and allies to reflect on the challenges they have overcome together…”
