The FBI has secretly funded and directly engaged with drug traffickers and pirates, including members of the famous scattered spider cybercrimination group, as part of a crypto-en-Caisse silver laundering bite, according to new details reported Tuesday by 404 mediaciting court documents.
The federal authorities have led the money laundering program on the theme of Elon Musk on almost a year after having stopped its original operator, the Indian National Anurag Pramod Murarka, 30, who was sentenced In January at 10 years in prison for conspiracy to commit money laundering.
During the one -year infiltration operation, federal agents prevented an additional $ 1.4 million from laundering themselves by pretending to be Murarka, court documents to show.
Murarka previously used the alias “Elonmuskwhm” and “La2nyc” to receive the crypto from drug traffickers and hackers, converting digital assets into cash via a complex Hawala network – an illegal informal money transfer system in several countries.
Murarka has announced money laundering services on the Darknet markets from April 2021 to September 2023 and used encrypted communications with customers, ordering them to send the crypto to specific wallets.
Criminal products were hidden in envelopes and children’s books as part of the program, Decrypt reported.
In January, the United States Ministry of Justice said $ 20 million was bleached by the operation.
After the FBI started investigating Murarka, the authorities attracted it to the United States by approving its visa request.
Upon arrival, he was arrested, allowing the FBI to take over the illicit company, which was operated via a post office the size of a hangar in Kentucky, according to the report.
As part of the FBI management, the infiltration operation continued to treat crypto payments and follow cash deliveries to the American Murarka partners.
Under the federal law, Murarka must serve a minimum of 85% of his prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release.
