Tybee Island Police Issue Warnings, Reminders Ahead of July 4th Holiday Weekend

Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning to visit Tybee Island over Independence Day weekend.

PEOPLE CAME TO THE BEACH TOWN TO CELEBRATE. AS WJCL 22 NEWS’ LYDIA BLACKSTONE EXPLAINS… THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND SAW A **MUCH BIGGER CROWD… THAN LAST YEAR.// THERE WERE A LOT MORE NUMBERS THIS WEEKEND HERE IN TYBEE FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. IT WAS ABOUT A 77% INCREASE OVER WHAT THEY SAW LAST YEAR. WE WERE HERE TODAY TO TALK TO PEOPLE WHO PREFER A QUIET DAY LIKE TUESDAY INSTEAD OF THE BUSY WEEKEND. “IT’S A GREAT DAY TO GO OUT AND SEE WHERE PEOPLE MAY HAVE DROPPED JEWELRY OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. MOST OF THE TIME WE’RE PICKING UP TRASH, BUT EVERY TIME SOMEONE WILL DROPPED A NICE RING OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.” ((NORMAN DAVIS, TYBEE VISITOR)) THE DAY AFTER A VERY BUSY WEEKEND AT THE BEACH, NORMAN ADAMS IS ON TYBEE WITH HIS METAL DETECTOR. HE SAYS HE DOES IT AFTER ALL THE BIG PARTIES BECAUSE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE COME TO THE BEACH AND MAY HAVE DROPPED SOMETHING. ((GFX 2)) THIS YEAR TYBEE HAS SEEN 62,000 PEOPLE, LAST YEAR THERE WERE ONLY 35,000, A 77% GROWTH. CASSIDI KENDRICK, OF THE TOWN OF TYBEE, SAYS THEY ARE ADJUSTING TRAFFIC PATTERNS BASED ON THOSE NUMBERS. “I THINK THIS YEAR IS IN FULL SPRING. WE ARE ALL PREPARED FOR ALL THE VISITS. WE HOPE EVERYONE WILL COME OUT AND BE RESPECTFUL OF THE BEACH, CLEAN UP AFTER THEY COME AND SUPPORT ALL OF OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES HERE.” » ((CASSIDI KENDRICK, TYBEE ISLAND COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR)) BUT OTHERS SAY THE LIMITED PARKING IS GIVING THEM A LITTLE LATER IN THE WEEK. “WE THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE A LITTLE LESS NUMBERS ON TUESDAY THAN ON MONDAY. AND SO FOR WEATHER REASONS, WE WANTED TO HAVE MORE SPACE ON THE BEACH. » ((BOLTE FAMILY, TYBEE VISITORS)) BUT FOR THOSE WHO CAME THIS WEEKEND, THE POLICE DIDN’T HAVE TO BE TOO ACTIVE WITH 10 ARRESTS AND 28 TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS ((TAKE GFX 1)) BUT FOR NORMAN, HIS BEACH DAY WILL STILL BE THE NEXT DAY… “I’M PRETTY SURE WE’LL FIND SOMETHING. I DON’T KNOW HOW GOOD IT’LL BE.” ((NORMAN DAVIS, TYBEE VISITOR)) AND IF YOU’RE PLANNING A TRIP HERE AND WORRIED ABOUT PARKING, YOU CAN SIGN UP FOR THE TOWN OF TYBEE ALERTS THROUGH A LINK ON THEIR WEBSITE. THEY SEND ALERTS IF THE PARKING LOT IS FULL OR TRAFFIC IS BAD
