Bungie lays off 220 employees, moves others to PlayStation


Separately, Parsons wrote that Bungie is working to bring on another 155 employees in other departments within Sony Interactive Entertainment. Those numbers, combined with the 100 people laid off in October of last year, mean that Bungie has lost about 40% of its total workforce in the past 12 months. Bungie had about 1,200 employees last year before 100 people were laid off due to a delay in implementing the new system. Destiny 2: Final Form expansion.

This latest layoff announcement was accompanied by news that Bungie employees are working on a new game.

“We are working with PlayStation Studios leadership to bring one of our incubator projects – an action game set in an all-new sci-fi universe – to fruition, forming a new studio within PlayStation Studios to continue its exciting development,” Parsons wrote.

Parsons explained all this news by stating that Bungie had grown too quickly and had spread its management team too thin across its many projects. This had a domino effect on the studio’s known projects, leading to what Parsons called a “lack of quality” with Destiny 2‘s Fall of light the expansion and delay of its next game, Marathon.

“We were too ambitious, our financial safety margins were exceeded and we started running in the red,” he writes.

Parsons wrote that Bungie will continue to focus on Destiny 2 And Marathon. “We still have over 850 team members building Fate And Marathonand we will continue to create incredible experiences that exceed our players’ expectations.”
