Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro recently signed a series of new laws that bring his total for the year to 102. The legislation addresses property rights and alcohol sales, reflecting a broad legislative agenda.
One of the key pieces of legislation passed earlier this month was Senate Bill 1236, which seeks to simplify the process for landlords to deal with squatters. The bill amends the Landlord and Tenant Act of 1951, improving the definitions and procedures related to repossession, ensuring that landlords have clearer paths to recover their property.
Another significant change came with Senate Bill 688, which expands the sale of ready-to-drink cocktails. This amendment to the Alcoholic Beverage Code allows for the issuance of permits for ready-to-drink cocktails, expanding the business operations of liquor stores and distributors in the state.
House Bill 663 addresses residency disputes in school districts by amending the Public School Code of 1949. The bill clarifies residency requirements and entitlements to free school privileges, with the goal of resolving disputes more efficiently.
On the financial side, Senate Bill 24 facilitates the automatic restitution of unclaimed property. This law amends the Internal Revenue Code to improve the process by which citizens can claim property that has been paid for or surrendered to the state as abandoned or unclaimed.
Finally, the Solar Energy for Schools Grant Program is established under House Bill 1032. This initiative will be administered by the Department of Community and Economic Development and is designed to promote the use of solar energy in Pennsylvania schools.
These new laws reflect Governor Shapiro’s commitment to addressing a variety of issues affecting Pennsylvanians, from everyday property concerns to broader economic and environmental initiatives.
