And although the Three Lions put in a better performance, that 33rd-minute moment was one of the few chances of the first half.

BBC commentator Shearer questioned how Freuler had escaped punishment, with the BBC commentator even claiming the midfielder had “saved the cross”.

Fans were stunned to see Orsato let play continue – and also not to have the free-kick ruled out when England wasted the loose ball.

Controversy erupted when Kobbie Mainoo made a breakthrough from midfield.

The Manchester United midfielder capped his run by passing the ball to Kieran Trippier on the left.

The Newcastle full-back dropped back onto his stronger right foot to threateningly drive the ball wide.

But Freueler, just outside the area, appeared to raise his arms deliberately.

The English players immediately appealed, but to no avail.
