The search for two missing Louisiana children has ended tragically. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Mississippi U.S. Marshals that they had arrested Daniel Callahan in Jackson, Mississippi in connection with a homicide, and a statewide Amber Alert was issued on Thursday. The sheriff’s office said Callahan led authorities to his car, where 6 Jalie Brunett, 12, was found alive. He then led police to the body of 4-year-old Erin Brunett. Jackson police said at a news conference that the surviving child was taken to a hospital for treatment and that they were working to determine the circumstances of the other child’s death. “Based on the crime scene, what it looks like, this may be the location where human trafficking occurred,” Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said. “We see cages, small animal cages. It’s very, very disturbing for me as a police chief and as a father to witness and see what I saw.” Callahan and the girl’s mother, Callie Brunett, were in a relationship, according to Sheriff Daniel Edwards. Callahan is believed to have killed Brunett, according to Edwards. Callahan was found after a suspicious person report in Jackson. A brief chase with Callahan led to his arrest. Louisiana State Police issued an Amber Alert around 12:20 p.m. for the missing girls. Edwards said the homicide investigation began Thursday morning on North Cooper Road in Loranger. Callie Brunett, 35, of Loranger, was found dead in her home after missing for more than a day. Her two young children, Jalie, 6, and Erin, 4. , were reported missing. Edwards said Brunett’s father found Callie’s body Thursday morning on the floor of her bedroom, inside her trailer. According to Edwards, Brunett’s father reported his daughter missing Wednesday after she did not return home. The last time they spoke to him was Tuesday afternoon. The incident is believed to be domestic in origin, according to Edwards. Edwards said there was a 36-hour gap between the last time the family spoke with Burnett and when the children were discovered missing. According to Edwards, deputies have not been able to question Callahan at this time.
