A new option in Android 16 Beta 2 allows users to easily modify system measurement units, temperature units and more “regional preferences”.
Android has, at the level of the system, long defined a “default value” for certain types of information which may vary from one place to another. This includes units by default of measurement or temperature. In the United States, it would be Fahrenheit for temperature and imperial (United States) for measures, but in most Other countries would be Celsius and metric. In general, Android will define these units according to the location or language of your device. It works perfectly the majority of time, but in cases where you may use a different language, or simply prefer another unit of measurement, changing these preferences can be a little painful because Android has not had a simple menu to that.
This changes in Android 16 Beta 2.
This last update has introduced a new “regional preferences” section on the “Languages” page of parameters. Android 16 beta 2 will allow you to change:
- Region
- Temperature – Celsius or Fahrenheit
- Measurement system-Metric, Imperial (United States), Imperial (United Kingdom)
- First day of the week – Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
One system default of the system will always be applied according to your region / language selections, but these new menus facilitate the modification of these specific preferences after the fact.
These modifications will not be reflected in all applications, but everything that refers to the “default” parameter of Android should be reflected. Some applications will contain their own adjustments for these parameters, while others can push users directly to this menu, such as Google’s Pixel Weather application. During quick tests, Google Maps ignored the change of measure, but the Pixel weather has changed for Celsius on request.
