The advanced Android 16 protection mode is based on Google’s advanced protection program, which was introduced in 2017 to provide an additional safety layer to high -risk people to be hacked. The program adds rigor to security by requiring the use of a safety key or a passing key to connect to a Google account, prevents potentially harmful files from being downloaded and deactivates the installation of Applications from outside the Google Play Store. Android 16 adds to these protections by also deactivating 2G connectivity and activating the MTE (a functionality which helps applications to detect the vulnerabilities related to memory) for applications that support it, offering even stronger protection for registered users.
In addition, Android 16 presents a new API called AdvancedprotectionManager This allows applications to check if you are registered with advanced protection. For example, an application type signal could automatically activate its integrated screen locking and its screenshot blocking features for those registered with advanced protection. Without this API, applications have no way of saying if you are part of the program, so you will have to manually activate the additional security features. With this new API, however, applications can quickly indicate that you prioritize security and then activate additional security measures.

Although the new API AdvancedprotectionManager is included in Android 16 Beta 2, there is currently no way of activating the new advanced protection mode. It is not enough to register for the advanced Google protection program, because Android 16 Beta 2 does not synchronize the statement of the program with the OS function. This will change once Google deploys the new “Advanced Protection” page in Google Play Services, however.
Once Google has put the OS level control available, it will be interesting to see which applications benefit from the new API. After all, the advanced protection reaches its security objective in one click depends on whether the applications support the new API, after all.
