According to a new code review by Android Authority, Google is working on a new screen mode for Android 16 that could expand split-screen multitasking to include up to three apps on tablets.
The different parts of the tablet screen can then be used to run three different applications side by side for improved productivity. The feature appears to be exclusive to Android tablets, perhaps because it needs a larger screen to be useful.
Android Authority notes that Google appears to have taken inspiration from OnePlus’ multitasking feature, Open Canvas. The feature launched in conjunction with the company’s foldable OnePlus Open in 2023 and allows three apps to run alongside each other simultaneously.
Android 16 is expected to be released in the second quarter of 2025.
