Android could change the way you access the quick settings

  • Google is working on a change in how fast internet and Bluetooth parameters develop.
  • Instead of opening in panels that float above the fast parameter panel, these tiles could develop to fill the panel itself.
  • This is similar to how Wi-Fi and Bluetooth tiles worked from Android 5.1 to Android 8.1.

Google published the first beta version of Android 16 last week, but on the surface, it does not have many new features. This certainly does not seem different from the previous Android version, but it is only because Google has hidden many user interface changes on which it works. For example, Google works on a total overhaul of notifications and fast parameter panels, but you would not know from the public beta version. I discovered this effort thanks to an investigation, and while examining the first beta version of Android 16, I discovered another major change linked to the fast parameters which has an impact on the way internet and Bluetooth tiles are include.

In addition to the redesigned panel, Google also plans to modifications to extended internet behavior and Bluetooth tiles. Currently, the two tiles appear in floating panels. However, this was not always the case.

From Android 9 to Android 11, the Wi-Fi tile was not expandable. It only served as a quick switch to Wi-Fi radio and a shortcut to complete Wi-Fi settings. This has changed in Android 12 with the introduction of the Internet tile, which combined Wi-Fi and mobile data and spread to the panel we see today. The Bluetooth tile only became extensible until Android 14 QPR2, which introduced the Bluetooth panel.

Longtime Android users can remember that expandable quick parameter tiles existed before Android 9. In Android 5.1 to 8.1, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth tiles can be extended by pressing the arrow below them. Instead of going out in floating panels, the tiles simply developed in the fast parameter panel itself. Google deleted this feature in Android 9 with the introduction of a redesigned quick parameter panel, which has remained to Android 12. However, it seems that the company could bring it back.

While I was searched in Android 16 Beta 1, I discovered the code for a new functionality of quick “detailed” parameters. With a little effort, I managed to allow functionality. After activating it, I noticed that the internet and Bluetooth tiles no longer appeared in floating panels but rather widened to fill the area in the fast parameters panel, similar to the way things worked in Android 5.1 – Android 8.1. However, the functionality is clearly still in development, as evidenced by the duplicated text and the lack of data in the extended tiles.

Given the unfinished state of this feature, I don’t know when it could be put online. It may not be launched alongside the rest of the redesign of fast parameters, which is always a work in progress. In fact, I am ready to bet that the new design of fast parameters will not be ready for the stable version of Android 16 in the second quarter. It is too unfinished to send, without any way to slide between notifications and fast parameter panels, contrast problems when light mode is activated and other bugs. Although the stable version of Android 16 is still in months, Google generally finalizes major changes well in advance. Given its current state, this feature can be delayed up to a later version of Android.

I will continue to monitor the next Android beta to see how things are progressing in the new fast parameter panel. As you can see, Google not only revises the design; It also adds new features such as the categories of tiles and redone tiles. The company could plan more modifications that force it to push the release of the new design to an Android 16 QPR or even Android 17.
