Tl; DR
- Google experiences the implementation of the locking screen clock in more surfaces, including the top of the notification panel.
- This feature is not yet live in the latest beta version of Android 16, but it could arrive in one of the quarterly outings.
- The clock appears only in the new Split notification panel, however, and it is not clear if Google will bring it to that existing combined.
One of the reasons why many people like Android phones is the way they can be personalized, from the home screen to the locking screen. The degree of customization differs between phones, but in general, Android allows you to change enough to really make your phone. Pixel phones, for example, allow you to personalize the style of the locking screen clock, giving your locking screen a personal button. Your clock choice is not reflected anywhere else in the operating system at the moment, but this could change in a future update of Android 16.

After the recent version of Android 16 Beta 3, we examined the update to determine if Google had progressed during the revision of the fast parameter panel. Google has worked to divide notifications and fast parameter panels on distinct pages, similar to manufacturers like Samsung and Xiaomi. Although the new double-page user interface is not yet live in the beta 3, we were able to make it work for a quick demonstration, as indicated below.
One thing that was particularly noticeable was to how much the clock was larger in the new notifications panel. In Android 15 and previous versions, the clock occupied a small area at the top left of the notification panel. As part of the new double-page panel user interface, the clock occupies its own dedicated section above the multimedia player in the notifications panel. The clock is not at all displayed in the new fast parameter panel, however, because the area above the multimedia player is rather reserved for multi-users, publishing, parameters and power menu buttons.
I did not think much of this change at the beginning, but when I went to change the style of locking screen clock in the Pixel Wallpaper application, I noticed that the clock had been updated accordingly in the new notifications panel. It seems that Google displays the same clock that appears on the locking screen, with all the theme changes you make. Some clocks seem strange when placed in the notification panel, while some, like the weather clock, are not entirely shown. In general, I think that this feature seems quite beautiful, and I hope that Google will eventually send it to the future.
If Google plans to publish this feature, it will probably not arrive in the next stable update of Android 16. Indeed, the functionality is currently linked to the new double page panel, which is still unfinished. It is possible that the company allows the functionality of one of the quarterly outputs of Android 16, however, similar to its plans for locking screen widgets for phones in Android 16 QPR1. If this is Google’s plan, we hope to see more progress made to polish new notifications and fast parameter panels in future updates.
