iOS 18.1 was released in October with the first Apple Intelligence features for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models, including AI-generated notification summaries. While this feature can sometimes be useful, it has unfortunately led to inaccurate news summaries. In turn, Apple recently promised to fix this problem.

Apple said earlier this month at BBC News that it plans to release an iOS 18 update “in the coming weeks” that will “further clarify when displayed text is a summary provided by Apple Intelligence.” With an Apple Intelligence label, it would be clear that the summaries came from Apple, not directly from the news source.

Apple also emphasized that Apple Intelligence remains in beta, so hopefully the news summaries will become more accurate over time.

It’s unclear when the software update will be released, or what version it will ultimately be. This could be iOS 18.3, which is currently in beta and expected to be released at the end of January. A minor update like iOS 18.2.2 or iOS 18.3.1 is also possible. Or maybe we’ll see the labels appear in the iOS 18.4 beta in early February.

iOS 18.3 is shaping up to be a minor update, with the only potential new feature being support for robot vacuums in the Home app, but that feature isn’t available yet. iOS 18.4 will be more exciting, as it will include several Apple Intelligence improvements for Siri, including on-screen recognition, personal context, deeper per-app controls, and more.
