Area residents wake up Thursday to damage from overnight storms


TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Thousands of residents in Topeka and northeast Kansas woke up Thursday morning to see the damage left by severe storms that hit the area overnight.

It is the latest in a series of storms this spring and summer that have caused power outages affecting thousands of area residents.

Evergy Power reported that more than 40,000 customers were without power as of 5:45 a.m. Thursday, while FreeState Power reported about 1,000 customers without power at the same time in northeast Kansas.

Meanwhile, crews worked through the night to restore power, repair downed power lines and clear streets of debris after the storms.

Authorities said early Thursday, a barricade was erected on SW Topeka Boulevard between 37th Street and Interstate 470 in south Topeka.

Additionally, Evergy Power crews were working early Thursday morning to repair power poles that reportedly fell on SW Wanamaker Road, between 27th and 29th streets.

Another barricade was reported near SW 21st and Westport after a water main break was reported there around 5:15 a.m. Thursday.

Evergy Power crews were trying to restore power in the predawn hours Thursday to customers in northeast Kansas, while the Topeka City Department of Forestry worked to clear fallen trees and tree limbs from streets.
