The Buffalo Bills punting competition ended before it could even begin.
Buffalo released kicker Jack Browning on Wednesday to make room for safety Terrell Burgess. Browning was signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft. It was thought that the San Diego State UDFA could push Sam Martin for the team’s kicking job. However, injuries elsewhere on the roster forced the team to release Browning.
The Bills had two safeties expected to compete for a starting job get injured early in training camp. Veteran Mike Edwards is out with a hamstring injury and Cole Bishop left Tuesday’s practice with an injury. The severity of Bishop’s injury is unknown, but WIVB-TV’s Josh Reed spotted Bishop with his arm heavily bandaged after yesterday’s practice. His status will likely be updated Thursday when training camp resumes at St. John Fisher University.
Buffalo added veteran Kareem Jackson after the news about Edwards broke and added Burgess Wednesday morning. Burgess was one of four defensive backs practicing for Buffalo Tuesday.
Burgess, 25, spent the 2023 season with the Washington Commanders. He was originally selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. Burgess won a Super Bowl title with the Rams before joining the New York Giants (2022) and the Commanders. Burgess has played in 43 career games (4 starts).
