SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Brock Purdy threw three of his four touchdown passes to George Kittle and the San Francisco 49ers won 42-10 on Sunday night Dallas Cowboys, extending their dominance over the Dallas Cowboys.
The Niners (5-0) have knocked the Cowboys out of the playoffs in tight games the past two seasons, adding intrigue to what is considered an early-season matchup between contenders.
The score in the rematch wasn’t even close.
The Niners jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the Cowboys notched their first win of the night but never really caught on en route to tying a franchise record with 15th straight regular-season victory and earning their fifth 5-0 start. Threat.
As a starter in the NFL, Purdy calmly ripped apart the league’s stingiest defense to improve to 10-0, while San Francisco’s defense gave Dak Prescott a tough time all night .
“The defense did their job, so it made my life easy,” Purdy said.
After Dallas fell behind 28-10 in the third quarter, Prescott was sacked three times and intercepted twice. He threw two more interceptions in the fourth quarter, with the lone highlight being a 26-yard touchdown pass to KaVontae Turpin in the second quarter.
“It was a great night for the entire defense, the entire team,” said linebacker Fred Warner, who had a sack, an interception and a forced fumble. “It’s so much fun being here today.”
It was Dallas’ most lopsided defeat since a 49-17 loss to New Orleans in 2013.
Purdy once again made few mistakes. A week after throwing just one incomplete pass in a win over Arizona, he repeatedly found open looks downfield for Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and especially Kittle.
Purdy was 17-of-24 for 252 yards and no interceptions all season. He caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Kittle on the opening drive, completed a 38-yard pass on a reverse flea-flicker early in the second quarter, and then completed a 10-yard pass in the third quarter to end the game.
Kittle became the first Niner since Vernon Davis in 2009 to catch three touchdown passes in a game.
Purdy threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Juszczyk in the fourth quarter.
The Niners opened the scoring and marched 75 yards in seven plays, scoring on a 19-yard pass from Purdy to Kittle to take the lead. San Francisco opened the season with four touchdowns and one field goal, scoring a league-leading 31 points.
The 49ers defense was equally tough early on, limiting Dallas to six yards in the first quarter and without a first down for more than 17 minutes.
Christian McCaffrey scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter after fumbled near the goal line earlier in the game. It was his 14th consecutive game with a touchdown in the regular season or playoffs. The only players with longer streaks of playing time were Lenny Moore (17 games), OJ Simpson (15 games) and John Riggins (15 games).
