A pair of American League the teams continue their early week series on the diamond in Beantown. THE Cleveland Goalies are on the road as they play the third game of a four-game series with the Boston Red Sox Wednesday evening. Cleveland struck first in the series, winning 6-0 on Patriots’ Day Monday morning, and followed that up with a 10-7 victory in 11 innings Tuesday night in the second game of the set. Will the Guardians continue their winning streak or can Boston add to the standings of this series with a victory before the series finale on Thursday afternoon?

On Tuesday night, Cleveland got three hits from Steven Kwan (two runs) while Andres Gimenez (two runs, RBI), Gabriel Arias (two RBIs) and Tyler Freeman (two runs, RBI) each added two in a 14-hit attack. Freeman hit his second home run of the season in the victory. Tanner Bibee pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts, but sat out the decision. Emmanuel Clase (1-0) earned the win despite one run allowed (none earned) on a hit with no walks or strikeouts in just one inning of work. Scott Barlow fanned two in a 1-2-3 11th for his first stop.
Ben Lively takes to the hill for his Guardians debut as he makes his first start of the season in this competition. The Boston Red Sox hope to change things
Boston lost the first two games of this series after being shut out on Monday and blowing a ninth-inning lead Tuesday night to fall into extra time. The Red Sox entered Wednesday 9-9 on the season and sat in the basement of the AL East, three games behind the Yankees for first place. On Tuesday night, Boston got two hits each from David Hamilton, Triston Casas (run, RBI), Connor Wong (run, three RBIs) and Enmanuel Valdez (run, RBI), but still came up short. Wong (his second), Casas (his fifth) and Valdez (his second) each homered in the contest for the Red Sox. Garrett Whitlock didn’t factor into the decision as he pitched four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Josh Winckowski (1-1) took the loss by allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits with two walks and a strikeout in one inning of work.
Tanner Houck is on the slab as he makes his fourth start of the season in this competition for the Red Sox. He is 2-1 with a 2.04 ERA, 1.189 WHIP, two walks and 19 strikeouts in 17.2 innings of work this season. Houck suffered the loss in his last start, Friday at home against the Angels. He pitched five innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) on 12 hits with no walks and two strikeouts in a game the Red Sox lost 7–0. Houck makes his eighth career appearance and third start against the Guardians in this competition. He is 0-1 with one save, a 3.52 ERA, a 0.913 WHIP, four walks and 14 strikeouts in 15.1 innings of work against them. Houck is 7-14 with three saves, a 4.56 ERA, a 1.325 WHIP, 42 walks and 142 strikeouts in 134.1 innings in 37 career appearances, 23 starts, at Fenway Park .

Cleveland won the first two games of this series but it’s hard to have confidence in Lively, who didn’t pitch in the majors in 2020, 2021 or 2022 before resurfacing with the Reds this season. He’s in the mix with Cleveland due to injury issues such as Tommy John surgery that will cost Shane Bieber the rest of the season. The Guardians won the first two games of the set, but the fact remains that Boston’s bullpen imploded several times during Tuesday’s game. Houck was solid in his first two starts before getting mauled by the Angels in his last outing. Expect him to return to form and the Boston bats to carry the hosts to a well-deserved victory here.

Cleveland had seen the Under 66-48-5 in their 119 games heading into Wednesday’s action. The Guardians are 5th in points per game with 5.71 per game, although that jumps to 6.27 points per game on the road. Cleveland has posted an average total of 9.18 points per game and that drops to 8.82 points per game away from Progressive Field. Boston entered Wednesday night having gone 7-5-1 in its 13 games this season. The Red Sox are 16th in the majors in runs per game with 4.39 on the season and they have an average total of 8.61 runs per game. At home, Boston is averaging just 3.63 points per game and is averaging 10.13 points per game at Fenway Park. Lean toward the minus given Houck’s first two starts and the fact that Lively had success in his limited action against Boston.
Prediction: Under 9
