Cucurella looks to the future with club and country | News | Official site

Marc Cucurella hopes his strong end to the season with Chelsea can continue as he looks to help Spain win Euro 2024.

The Chelsea left-back impressed in an inverted full-back role in the latter parts of the season, regularly picking up the ball as the Blues looked to launch attacks down the left flank while switching to a more traditional defensive position when they were no longer in possession.

His impressive performances caught the eye and helped Cucurella earn a place in the Spanish squad for the European Championships in Germany – which kicked off last night as the hosts took on Scotland – with Spain opening their campaign against Croatia today in Berlin.

“Changing roles has been good,” our defender recently explained. “I try to do everything I can to help the team and if I play in more positions and it helps the team, I’m happy because I have more opportunities to play.

“I think in the first part of the season I also played back and as always I will try to do my best to help the team and win the match. Every time I am on the pitch, I’m happy to help but for sure I like playing in this position (inverted left-back).’

“I’m confident about leaving with the national team. Coming into the tournament, I think I played very well.

“I think this is my best form since I arrived at Chelsea. I think last season was a bit difficult and the start of the season a bit too.

“Then I got injured and had to stop playing for a few months. After the injury I feel very good. I feel that I played at a good level and I am happy to show my qualities because sometimes it was difficult.

Cucurella’s immediate focus is on La Roja and their strong showing in Germany, but, after this tournament and a deserved break, the former Brighton man will aim to hit the ground running with Chelsea ahead of the new season.

With the arrival of Enzo Maresca as the new head coach, it represents a new journey for the Blues and Cucurella is delighted to be part of a club he loves.

“I feel great and I’m excited for the future with Chelsea,” Marc added. “I feel very strong. I’m very happy here and I have a lot of confidence.

“Playing football is one of the best things I can do in my life. And playing for this club is simply incredible!
