Happy Tuesday everyone!
The Athletics often had issues with their bullpen last season as many pitchers dealt with injuries and/or rookie growing pains. The A’s bullpen will look a little different in 2024, but with the organization’s most senior player gone.
Trevor May will be closer to another team next season as he decides to hang up his boots. Maye announced his retirement from baseball after nine seasons in the major leagues;
Soon-to-be free agent Trevor May announced his retirement from baseball on Twitch.
“It’s been a long time coming,” May said. “This is not the end of my relationship with baseball. If anything, I would have done more in the game. But I want to go out on my own terms.”

The right-hander spent six seasons with the Minnesota Twins and another with the New York Mets before coming to Oakland last offseason. May signed a one-year deal to further close the gap, but the Athletics got off to a rocky start. He even went to the IL because of anxiety, which is not something that is easily discussed openly.
He returned to the clubhouse and started pitching like the team wanted him to. After the All-Star break, May posted a 1.50 ERA in 24 games and made 15 of 16 saves. That performance led many to speculate that May would be traded before the , but he ultimately stayed with the club for the remainder of the season. Now he will ride off into the sunset on his own terms, as he noted today.
May finished his career with a 4.24 ERA, but had a much better 3.60 ERA as a reliever. He could have easily kept pitching the next year, but he ended up finishing very high.
That’s not all the news about May, though. He also took aim today’s statement at Athletics owner John Fisher, launching into a scathing attack on him, imploring him to “sell the team”:
“Take mom and dad’s money somewhere else, you idiot. If you want to be a greedy person, own it. There’s nothing more vulnerable than being afraid of the camera. That’s something I’ve been struggling with thing, rather than eviscerating that person.”

The fact that he is retiring may make him more willing to talk about the topic in this way. Now he can let go of Fisher and his decision-making. I would say he represents a large portion of the clubhouse.
He only lasted one season with the team, but May was beloved by A’s fans. His victory in ending the fashion industry’s reverse boycott:
Can’t stop watching this clip. Congratulations on a successful career and enjoying your retirement, May!

We heard the harshest words from one of the players:
“Sell the team, man,” Trevor May said. “Take mom and dad’s money somewhere else, idiot. If you’re going to be a greedy bastard, own it. There’s nothing weaker than being afraid of the cameras.”
