4th of July Fireworks Safety

If you choose to celebrate Independence Day at home and avoid parades and public events, you should check your city or county ordinances before purchasing fireworks. Fireworks are illegal in some areas of the state due to the serious injuries and millions in property losses caused by wildfires caused by fireworks.

According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, an average of 18,000 fires are started each year by fireworks, whether illegal or “safe and sane” and used improperly.

To safely celebrate the Fourth of July, the State Fire Marshal’s Office recommends using fireworks outdoors only and never near dry grass or other flammable materials. It’s also recommended to keep a bucket of water and a hose nearby when using fireworks.

No matter where you go in California, using fireworks that explode, leave the ground, or move out of control is illegal. These fireworks include flares, bottle rockets, and Roman candles. Anyone caught in possession of illegal fireworks could be fined or arrested.

All legal fireworks bear the California State Fire Marshal’s “Safe and Sane” logo. If you are unsure whether your fireworks are legal, you can contact your nearest Cal Fire center or local fire station.
