China has become a rising force in women’s hockey under the mentorship of two Australian legends and recently won gold at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, punching their ticket to Paris.
The Chinese women’s hockey team finished fourth in Group A and qualified for the top eight. They will be seeking their second Olympic medal after a silver in Beijing in 2008.
The Australians, meanwhile, were Olympic champions in Seoul 1988, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, but have failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals since.
Australia vs China Women’s Hockey Head-to-Head Review
Since 2013, Australia and China have met 27 times. The Hockeyroos have won 13, while China have won seven. The other seven have ended in a draw.
The Hockeyroos won the group stage of the Tokyo 2020 Games with a resounding 6-0 victory, which was the last meeting between the two teams on the Olympic stage.
However, four of China’s seven wins have come in their last six meetings with the Hockeyroos. The last time the two teams met was at the 2024 Perth International Hockey Festival in April this year. China won the match by a 3-2 margin.
