Scotland versus Switzerland: Steve Clarke’s men take on Switzerland in an unmissable Group A match which kicks off at 8pm (BST). Scott Murray has the latest…
Full-time: Germany 2-0 Hungary
Gewrmany wins, as expected thanks to goals from Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan, but Hungary can leave the field tonight with their heads reasonably held high.
After their inexplicably soft performance against Switzerland, they came forward tonight and created several chances, but ultimately paid for their toothlessness in front of goal.
After back-to-back defeats, they will need to beat Scotland in their final group game to have any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. Germany are through to the round of 16 and are looking good, even if they look a little vulnerable in defense.
90+2 minutes: Szoboszlai is penalized for a foul, then receives a yellow card for pushing the ball away in frustration. It’s over in Stuttgart!
90 minutes: Neuer releases a cross, the ball is turned towards goal by Gazdag and Kimmich clears for Germany. They break the ground on a counterattack which fails when Sane chooses the wrong pass. In all the excitement, Orban fell into the penalty area, calling for a penalty. I’m not sure what, if anything, happened to him but he didn’t.
88 minutes: Double substitution for Hungary: Daniel Gazdag and Kevin Csoboth replace Sallai and Varga, the striker who missed Hungary’s best chance of the match by heading over the hour mark.
86 minutes: Fuhrich gains possession in midfield, charges forward and gets around Roland Salai. There’s no shooting, so he plays the ball inside. Fulkrug tries his luck from distance but fails to hit the target.
85 minutes: Another Stuttgart player (on loan from Brighton) enters the field as Deniz Undav replaces Ilkay Gundogan.
83 minutes: A Hungarian corner goes deep into the penalty area. With Martin Adam lurking behind him, Emre Can does well to jump and head the ball over the bar for another.
82 minutes: Hungary strike for a long time trying to spot Roland Sallai on the right flank. The pass is wayward and Mittlestadt sends the ball, avoiding any danger.
80 minutes: Shortly after entering, Martin Adam brought down Mittlestat and conceded a free kick about 30 yards from his own goal. Leroy Sané takes the free kick and sends it high and wide.
77 minutes: Double substitution for Hungary: Martin Adam and Zsolt Nagy replace full-backs Bolla and Kerkez. Adam is a unity…
76 minutes: Gulasci comes down quickly to save a low shot from Sane’s right foot.
72 minutes: Double substitution in Germany: Emre Can and Chris Fuhrigh replace Robert Andrich and Jamal Musiala. It’s a real opportunity for Fuhrich, who represents his country in the stadium his Stuttgart team calls home.
70 minutes: Joshua Kimmich sends a rocket with a diagonal cross shot into the face of the Hungarian goal. He speeds away from the far post and moves at a pace too fast for Musiala to head him away.
AIM! Germany 2-0 Hungary (Gundogan 67)
Germany doubles its lead! In acres of space in front of several backpedaling defenders, Ilkay Gundogan runs from deep to sweep a low cross from Max Mittlestadt from the left into the corner from 14 yards.
64 minutes: Corner of Hungary. Nothing comes of it. They have just made a substitution by bringing in Lazslo Kleinheisler in place of Adam Nagy in midfield.
63 minutes: With 30 minutes or a little more to go, Hungary are behind but doing well. At the risk of stating the obvious, we suspect that the next goal of this match will be crucial.
60 minutes: Barnabas Varga takes the lead from Jonathan Tah, who wasn’t tight enough on him, leaping to meet a wonderful Sallai cross from the left, but is unable to direct his effort low on target. It was a glorious opportunity and a bitter failure.
58 minutes: Germany double substitution: Niclas Fulkrug and Leroy Sane replace Kai Havertz and Florian Wirz.
54 minutes: Near the touchline, Gundogan cuts inside and places the ball in front of the Hungarian goal. Gulasci strikes clearly and the ball passes well to Kroos, whose shot violently deflects a defender. Even though he seems hopelessly caught off guard, Gulasci does superbly to keep him away. Excellent goalkeeper.
52 minutes: New Hungarian counter-attack and Szoboszlai puts the ball back into Schafer’s feet. He turns at the entrance to the penalty area but comes up against a solid wall of resistance formed by German defensive midfielder Robert Andrich.
50 minutes: Hungary recovers the ball on a throw-in from Germany and the ball is played into the feet of Andras Schafer at the edge of the area. He gains the upper hand on the turnaround but fails to break through the defense. He ends up being penalized for a foul and Germany can clear their lines.
49 minutes: Szoboszlai passes the ball past Andras Schafer, who passes it to Milos Kerkez near the touchline. The Bournemouth defender wins a corner but nothing comes of it.
47 minutes: Hungary win a free-kick in their own penalty area after Kai Havertz is seen grabbing a fistful of someone’s jersey or another.
Second half: Germany 1-0 Hungary
46 minutes: Play resumes with Hungary in possession and no personnel changes on either side. Hungary kick off by throwing the ball towards no fewer than five players sprinting down the left flank, as if they were playing a rugby match. Fortunately, none of them figured it out and Germany escaped.
Half-time: Germany 1-0 Hungary
Everything is perfect at the break and after surviving big scares in the first and last seconds of the half, Germany leads thanks to Jamal Musiala’s rather strange and slightly controversial goal. Hungary were not unduly phased by falling behind and are a far sterner test for Germany in 45 minutes than Scotland managed in 90.
Hungary’s equalizer ruled out for offside
45+2 minutes: Hungarian free kick, wide to the left. Szoboszlai throws the ball into the penalty area, it is returned by Orban and Neuer throws the ball into the path of Sallai, who volleys it home. His celebration was abruptly cut short because Orban was offside when the ball was sent.
43 minutes: Germany continue to monopolize possession, while Hungary hope to reach half-time without conceding again. It’s a heart-in-mouth moment for their players and fans as Musiala shoots from distance and hits the side netting. I thought he had scored in the top corner and wondered why his celebration was so subdued.
40 minutes : Germany wins its sixth corner and Kroos runs towards the flag again. His performance slips off the head of Hungarian striker Varga, who takes out corner number 7. There he sailed close to the wind, while the ball sailed This away from the far post. Mr Own Goal almost scored his fifth goal of the tournament!
38 minutes: Another corner from Germany, won once again by Mittlestadt. Willi Orban clears the ball sent into the mixer by Kroos, then Musiala is penalized for a foul on Orban in the Hungarian penalty area. Replays show that it was actually the Hungarian defender who stepped on Musiala’s instep. If Musiala had fallen to the ground and appealed, he would have had an exceptionally strong case to be awarded a penalty by the curtain pullers in the VAR room.
35 minutes: Max Mittlestadt sends a cross from the left into the German penalty area and after a short, impromptu game of head tennis, he is pushed away for a corner by Milos Kerkez. Toni Kroos’ last striker is half cleared, the ball is sent back into the mixer by Mittlestadt and Hungary clears again.
34 minutes: Although Jamal Musiala is the only player in this tournament to have scored two goals in this tournament, it is worth noting that he is currently ahead of our old friend Own Goal in the race for the golden boot.
31 minutes: Hungary responded well after going down a goal and continues to cause problems for Germany. Szoboszlai punches the air in frustration after seeing a volley deflected wide.
