General Motors (GM) has appointed Barak Turovsky as the first chief officer of artificial intelligence (AI), marking a major step in the automaker’s strategy to extend the integration of AI into its vehicles and commercial operations.

Turovsky previously directed AI initiatives to Cisco and was a key figure in the development of AI to Google. The Detroit car manufacturer has already operated the AI to improve key commercial functions, in particular the selection of EV chargers locations, the optimization of vehicle orders from the concessionaire and the rationalization of manufacturing. Turovsky’s appointment signals GM’s commitment to accelerating these efforts while sailing in the evolving car landscape.

However, the GM management team has seen an increasing accent on software and AI, with the recent promotions of the former managers of Apple Dave Richardson and Baris Cetinok to supervise the software division of the automaker.

Overall, by strengthening its expertise in AI, GM aims to improve the characteristics of vehicles, improve operational efficiency and raise global customer experience through its electrical, internal combustion and autonomous vehicle segments.
