The first major overhaul of the Gemini overlay on Android is starting to roll out to some users.
Gemini was launched on Android last February. When you long-press the power button, swipe up from the bottom corners, or say the keyword “Hey Google”, you get a rectangle with rounded corners. The Gemini spark appears in the upper left corner with a welcome message and a shortcut to open the full app. At the bottom, you get a tablet for keyboard, voice and camera input, while Gemini Live sits in the lower right corner.
A new design collapses everything into a text field and follows the Gemini app’s home screen simplification in October.
Like in the full app, you get a “more” menu on the left followed by “Ask Gemini”. The voice input circle and the entire overlay are bathed in the same blue/purple glow, which is quite prominent in this new size. The Live shortcut completes this interface.
There is a a handful of reports today about people who are undergoing a Gemini overlay overhaul. It’s not yet widely deployed and we’re not seeing it on the devices we checked this afternoon.
This new overlay is quite compact, with many parallels to the Google search bar, even though it’s not pill-shaped. Overall, Gemini’s initial pre-response UI doesn’t need to be too big.
