Google no longer wants Android phones to ship with 16 GB storage: this is why

Storage has always been a problem for entry -level phones. It is generally provided that if you buy an entry -level phone, in particular its basic model, it will not have the best storage capacity. This can be quite limiting.

Android phones must have more storage, according to Google, if they want to include Google Services (AFP)

However, there are good news on this front, because Google would have changed the requirements of Android OEM regarding the minimum flash memory that their phones must have to qualify for the Android certification program.

This decision comes in response to the fact that many devices are always delivered with a naked minimum memory, including 16 GB. Now, Google has revised the requirement at 32 GB, starting with Android 15.

Android 15 phones with Google Services must have 32 GB storage

According to a report of Android authorityThe Android 15 devices will have to be shipped with at least 32 GB of internal storage. From this, Google requires that 75% must be reserved for data partition, which includes preinstalled system applications, application data, system files, etc.

Android Authority also notes that the previous minimum was 16 GB, which was introduced with Android 13.

What will this decision allow?

Consider this: a large part of the Android phones sold on a global scale are low -end models for the budget. By increasing the minimum storage, Google ensures that users of these devices will have a better experience, more space for applications, photos, videos and general use.

Although 32 GB is not huge according to modern standards, it is always a significant improvement compared to 16 GB. It guarantees that users will have at least room to store personal data. However, it is important to note that this requirement only applies to manufacturers of Android smartphones who wish to include Google’s mobile services. It is not compulsory for devices running Android Open Source Project (AOSP). In other words, if manufacturers want Google Play services on board, their phones must have at least 32 GB of basic memory.

In addition to that, Google has introduced another requirement: cellular devices launched with Android 15 must offer the possibility of sharing emergency contact data with the Android emergency location service each time an emergency call is made.

Other requirements include the management of Vulkan 1.3 and more, as well as compliance with the basic profile Android 2022 and the management of the welcome profile in Android 15.
