Google Photos redesign for Android removes Memories tab

After iOS, Google Photos for Android is simplifying the bottom bar by removing the “Memories” tab, although the automatic organizing feed – now called “Moments” – remains available.

As such, Google Photos now has a three-tabbed bottom bar with Photos, Collections, and Search, or “Ask” powered by Gemini. As a result, the app looks much cleaner, with other basic navigation elements located in the top bar: the “more” button for “Create New” and the recently introduced “Updates” feed which replaced sharing.

Earlier this year, Google Maps was also reduced to three tabs for a bit of symmetry. Hardware The bottom bars still look good with four tabs, but five, like in Google Home, stands out to me.

To make this change, Google Photos removed “Memories” during a deprioritization. The “scrapbook-style” feed introduced last August that automatically categorizes photos from the same event is now called “Moments” and can be found in the Collections tab. It now exists at the bottom next to People and Pets, Albums, Documents and Places, with album art that cycles through recent images.

There is no change in the functionality: “Your photos, organized according to your best moments. Add details, search and share with others.

As such, the “Memories” branding in Google Photos only refers to the carousel at the top of the main grid.

This Moments redesign is rolling out to Google Photos for Android as a server-side update with version 7.11. It is not yet widely available.
