Grimes celebrates pioneers creating “magic” with AI
While a large part of the music industry has moved away from AI, Grimes adopted it. In 2023, the musician and producer made the headlines when she announced that she would allow fans to simulate her voice using AI to create new music – and promised to divide the royalties with those who did it.
Time on Monday recognized Grimes and three other leaders shaping the future of AI at Time100 IA Impact prices in Dubai. The others who joined Grimes to receive recognition of their work in space included the professor of California Institute of Technology Anima Anandkumar, the visual artist Rebik Anadol and Arvind Krishna, CEO, president and president of IBM. The evening also presented a performance by the Emirati Arqam al shelter soul singer.
In his speech accepting the price, Grimes began by referring to a famous quote from Arthur C. Clarke in which the science fiction writer observes that advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. She then used the moment on stage as an opportunity to celebrate other notable innovators that she found deserving recognition, saying: “I wanted to shout some of my favorite wizards and a real magic that exists now.”
To his list of these magicians, Grimes appointed David Holz, the founder of Midjourney, a generative AI tool that creates images inspired by user prompts; Aza Raskin, a technologist who unchecks the language of whales using AI; And Sam ZeloofAn entrepreneur known for having started by building silicon tokens in his parents’ garage.
Grimes also underlined the singer-songwriter Holly Herndon, who created a website that allows users to detect if an artist’s work has been used in AI models, as well as a tool that allows It is up to artists to easily withdraw from training data sets. “This one is particularly poetic for me because I think everyone is panicking about this question,” noted Grimes. “The world is so focused on what is negative that we do not realize that there are magic solutions just before our eyes.”
“Technology has the bad habit of not canonize its heroes and, recently, the world has the bad habit of not celebrating its victories,” she said. “There are many people trying to save the world right now, and I think they are succeeding.”
The time100 Impact Awards Dubai was presented by the World Government Summit and the Museum of the Future.
