iPhone’s voice isolation allows for clear, noise-free calls, even on a busy street. You can let ambient sounds through or let your device automatically set the appropriate microphone mode. If you haven’t used it yet, now is a good time to learn how to enable voice isolation in iOS 18 and modulate your microphone.
How to enable voice isolation in iOS 18?
THE Voice isolation The feature on iOS 18 works on most calling or messaging apps, like Phone, FaceTime, WhatsAppAnd Messenger. On eligible devices, it is enabled by default and set to Automatic fashion.

If you want to tweak this new iPhone microphone feature a bit, follow these quick steps:
- Open your favorite calling app on your iPhone and call someone. For example, I used the FaceTime application.
- When the recipient has accepted the call request, a green dot will appear in the upper right corner, near the iPhone notch.
- Now open the iOS Control center by slide down the screen of upper right corner.
- Press the FaceTime controls menu at the top and below the notch. For any other calling application, like WhatsAppit will be WhatsApp controls.
- The guard Audio and video The menu will open overlaying the FaceTime app.
- You will see 4 options for controlling the iPhone microphone. These are Automatic, Standard, Voice isolationAnd Broad spectrum. Automatic will be the default selection.
- Now press the Voice isolation button to enable this feature.
- Double-tap any empty space on the screen to close the Audio and video And Control center overlays.
- Your iPhone will always use this microphone control setting in the future until you change it manually.
Here are the four microphone control options you’ll find in the Audio & Video menu while an audio or video call is in progress:
- Voice isolation: This mode blocks all ambient noise, only allows your voice, and filters out the rest.
- Standard: The audio and video call progresses as usual when this setting is enabled.
- Automatic: It anticipates the best option based on your calls and switches microphone inputs autonomously. For example, if you use the iPhone speaker, Automatic will use the Standard microphone mode. On the other hand, if you are talking to someone who is using the earpiece, Automatic will engage the Voice isolation mode.
- Broad spectrum: When this mode is applied, iPhone will not filter out ambient noise. This feature is currently not available for Phone application.
Requirements to use voice isolation
Here is the availability of the different microphone control features of the iPhone:
- If you use iOS 15.0you can use Broad spectrum And Voice isolation during all FaceTime audio and video calls.
- From iOS 16.4 and later Apple included the Voice isolation also in the Phone app. So when you call someone through a mobile carrier, you can enable voice isolation.

- With the launch of iOS 18.0 and later Apple added the Automatic microphone mode functionality to the iPhone microphone controls.

When you cannot change microphone control options, such as switching to Voice isolation Since AutomaticIt’s probably because you’ve muted the mic in the calling app. So press the Microphone icon on the app to activate the voice isolation feature.
If the caller on the other side complains about ambient noise even though you have configured Voice isolation before, just follow the steps mentioned earlier to switch Voice isolation from time to time. Activate the Automatic mic control and return to Voice isolation.
