iOS 18.4 adds new APIs for sports applications in Carplay

IOS 18.4 arrives soon, when the company published the RC (publication candidate) on Monday to developers and beta-testers. In addition to the features we already know, such as priority notifications and the expansion of visual intelligence, the update is also delivered with a new API for sports applications in Carplay.

Sports applications can now take advantage of the new Carplay API

Apple did not make a big announcement on the new API. Instead, he was discreetly revealed on a New documentation page On the Apple developer’s website. Named “CPNOWPLAYINGMODES SOCIES”, Apple describes the API as a “sports mode” for Carplay, which adapts the disposition of the game screen now to “sporting events”.

Interestingly, Apple says that the API only works for events with “exactly two teams”. Indeed, the applications using this API can display information on each team on the left and right sides of the screen, with a “large colorful image for the background”.

“The sporting mode represents a layout for the moment playing adapted to the live broadcast or the recorded reading of a sporting event which presents exactly two teams”, indicates the description of the API.

Since we are talking about a new API, it is now up to developers to adopt it in their applications so that we can see it in action. API requires an iPhone running iOS 18.4. For developers, it requires Xcode 16.3 RC or later.

This is not the only change to come to Carplay with iOS 18.4. The update also adds a third row of icons to cars with larger screens. In addition, Apple Maps EV Routing will now have knowledge of the fact that some cars can charge at Tesla Nacs stations.

According to Apple, iOS 18.4 will be published to the public in early April.
