With the Vikings currently 1-4 and without wide receiver Justin Jefferson for at least four games, discussions have begun again about whether quarterback Kirk Cousins could be available on the trade market.
Cousins has a lot of say in whether the small talk amounts to something more substantive. He has a no-trade clause, so any move would have to be approved by him, and there’s no indication Cousins plans to leave Minnesota in the final year of his contract.
On Wednesday, Cousins was asked if he could envision a day when he would waive that clause to facilitate a trade with another team. Cousins said the only thing on his mind is this week’s game against the Bears.
“You know I am Just very focused “Being 1-0 this week against the Bears, anything else is just not worth my time, energy or effort,” Cousins said, via Kevin Seifert of .com Attention.”
Accepting the trade means Cousins will have to quickly learn a new offense while positioning himself for free agency this offseason, which is a big problem Even if the Vikings’ season seems to be heading in the wrong direction. Any team that acquires him would have to match the salary the Vikings want, and right now there doesn’t appear to be anyone on the market.
An injury this weekend could change that, but it likely won’t sway Cousins from wanting to stay in Minnesota and plan his next step in the offseason.
