Emmy Russell never ceases to amaze them on “American Idol.”
Take Sunday’s show for example.
The granddaughter of late country music star Loretta Lynn took the stage as her name was called to crack the top 20, and she performed an original song, “Want You.”
“It’s just that I want someone who doesn’t want me to come back,” she said before the performance. “I really wish this person loved me the way I loved them.”

Russell then broke into her performance, and when she finished, host Ryan Seacrest admitted he was emotional. This raised the question of whether Seacrest needed a hug, which brought judge Luke Bryan on stage to lift Seacrest into his arms for a hug.
Bryan then joked that Seacrest was the most expensive thing he had ever owned.
Aside from the scene that played out, the judges were once again impressed with Russell.
“Miss Emmy, that was one of my favorite original songs that you sang,” Katy Perry said. “I know you were just a little nervous. I just want more breath, longer notes. Girl, like going swimming, learn to hold your breath more. We need longer notes from Emmy, and I know you have them. We need power. Come on, let’s go. It is now!”
“That was so you,” Bryan told Russell. “I loved it because it was so real, and I think you could really feel the emotion in it. This is what your artistry is all about and don’t lose it. But listen, what you did with this song is truly your signature. It was very moving and probably my favorite performance you’ve done.
Lionel Richie told him that “Want You” was a hit.
“First of all, before we go any further, it’s a hit record,” Lionel Richie said. “I don’t care. We can talk about the future, but it’s a hit record, and my dear, you are an incredible songwriter. Incredible performance.
