MINERAL COUNTY — Tens of thousands of people were left without power after Wednesday night’s storms and some are still waiting for power to be restored.
In addition to the power outages in Missoula, surrounding communities were also affected. Frenchtown lost power Wednesday night during the storm, but electricity was largely back on Friday morning.
While downtown Alberton has electricity, it remains unclear who has and doesn’t have power outside of the downtown area. Residents can head downtown if they need to charge their devices or get gas.
Superior lost power at 9 p.m. Wednesday and experienced several problems before power was largely restored Friday morning.
The city’s dispatch center had a problem with its backup generator and for several hours Superior sent its calls through Missoula.
Superior Hospital also experienced problems with its backup generators. The generator overheated after a few hours of operation, leaving the hospital without power.
No injuries were reported and the emergency generator was eventually restarted.
The city’s vaccine supply was also threatened by generator outages in the city center and at the hospital. However, the vaccines were able to be transported to the fire station in time to be saved.
Overall, city officials told MTN that sometimes Plans A through C fail and a broader planning strategy may be needed.
