TNT Sports NBA game analyst Reggie Miller has been the network’s top dog long enough to hear it all. Some basketball fans like it; some hate it. And almost everyone watching thinks he’s rooting for the other team.
In an interview with DIME Magazine published Wednesday, Miller explained why he likes it when fans think he’s biased against their team and why his priority as a broadcaster is joy above all else.
“The best compliments I give are on social media when I hear fans say, ‘You’re such a homer for the Lakers,’ and then the next comment is, ‘Why are you all on the Nuggets bandwagon?’ I did my job,” Miller told DIME’s Robby Kalland.
“That’s exactly what I want to hear.” I want the criticism to come from both sides, that is 50-50 after each match. This means that it was fair and balanced. The best compliment I get is, “Oh my God. Why are you everywhere with LeBron?’ Or: “Do you live in Denver?” Are you a Nuggets fan? It’s the best ! They are the best. THANKS. That means I’m doing my job.
Just like when he was a player for the Indiana Pacers, tearing the hearts of opposing fans with late-game baskets and competitive shots, Miller isn’t afraid to showcase his role as a broadcaster.
“As a player, I always wanted to perform,” he told DIME. “It’s pretty much the same way I approach my broadcasting. I’m on center court watching these incredible athletes perform at the highest level. Yes, we want to make it enjoyable for your casual fans, but without alienating your hardcore fans who are there for the stats, the races, the history of the game. So you have to be able to merge the two.
Miller is a perfect partner for the exuberant goofball Kevin Harlan, and both prove to be experts in each postseason. Miller knows his energy can rattle fans who desperately want their team to win. And he accepts it.
