Kieran Phillips had an exceptional evening, scoring two goals for the Republic in minutes 17 and 38. Luis Felipe and Sebastian Herrera scored during extra time, fending off the chances of penalties. Tuesday’s match was a rematch of sorts in the U.S. Open Cup after Sacramento beat San Jose 2-0 in 2022. And this year, Republic have added more stars up front with Trevor Amann and Kieran Phillips on loan from Huddersfield Town AFC in England. MLS teams began playing in the tournament starting in 1996 and no lower division team has won the USA. Open Cup since the Rochester Rhinos in 1999.
