Former NFL player Sergio Brown has been arrested in California in connection with his mother’s death, authorities in the Chicago suburb of Maywood announced Wednesday.
Brown was detained at the Mexican border near San Diego while trying to re-enter the United States, according to Maywood police.
Brown was taken into custody after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He could face first-degree murder charges in the death of his mother, Myrtle Brown, who was found dead outside their suburban home in mid-September.
Extradition proceedings are ongoing, according to authorities.
Authorities have been searching for Brown since her 73-year-old mother found her body near a creek behind her home in suburban Chicago.
Medical examiners determined she was injured in the attack.
Sergio Brown played defensive back for the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills from 2010 to 2016. He graduated from Providence High School in Maywood and attended the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.
Authorities are also investigating a video purportedly of Brown that was released last month. The bizarre footage shows a man who looks like Brown calling news about his mother’s death “fake news” while tropical music plays in the background. In the video, the man says he thought his mother was on vacation.
The unverified video, which lasts a total of 51 seconds, was posted on social media.
