We may get two weather updates this morning. Late afternoon thunderstorms could be severe across far southern Michigan. Additionally, the back of the weather system could be slower to wrap up colder rain in northern Michigan on Memorial Day.
Here is the Storm Prediction Center’s tornado and severe thunderstorm forecast for this afternoon and evening. Although the risk of an isolated tornado is low, you should know that it exists.
Thunderstorms are more likely to produce severe wind gusts along the southern two tiers of counties. This would happen between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. today.
Here is the radar forecast showing the arc of thunderstorms late in the afternoon and then enveloping precipitation arriving in northern Michigan late on Memorial Day.
The weather will therefore become stormy over southern Michigan late in the afternoon and will change to showers only over northern Michigan this evening. Memorial Day is expected to have many more dry hours than wet hours across most of Lower Michigan. Eventually, at some point late today, we will have a large area of colder rain moving southeast into northern Lower Michigan.
