KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The threat of severe storms and flash flooding is returning to the Midwest, where a series of thunderstorms and rain are increasingly likely throughout the holiday week.
Severe storms are threatening Iowa, Missouri and Kansas on Tuesday, where they are expected to hit hard. High winds, a few tornadoes and large hail are among the hazards expected from these storms.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) said scattered severe thunderstorms are very likely in southern Iowa, northern Missouri and northeastern Kansas between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. Central Time. A level 3 out of 5 severe storm risk has been issued there.

Nearly a million people are affected, including major cities on the outskirts of Kansas City such as St. Joseph, Liberty and Gladstone, Missouri; Leavenworth, Kansas; and Ottumwa, Iowa.
The weather is expected to continue to affect the United States through July 4. By Wednesday and Thursday, the threat of heavy rain will shift to the Ohio Valley and eventually to the Northeast by Thursday night.
