“A few tornadoes are likely,” the US Storm Prediction Center said. Additionally, damaging winds of up to 113 kilometers per hour are likely, as well as scattered large hail up to 4 centimeters in diameter.

The storms come after a period of intense early-season heat and humidity along the mid-Atlantic coast, with temperatures near record highs Sunday for a second straight day. Maximum temperatures in New York’s Central Park were 33°C around 2 p.m., while they were 37°C at Reagan National Airport outside Washington, tying a record for the same date set in 1988 .

The scorching temperatures – the result of a large, persistent ridge of high pressure – have increased energy demand, slowed trains and prompted local authorities to urge people to stay hydrated and air-conditioned when possible.

New York state officials also issued an air quality advisory for New York City, the Lower Hudson Valley and Long Island.

The next band of thunderstorms will ease the heat, but relief for the region will be short-lived, with temperatures expected to rise further this week, forecasters said. The storms will also bring the possibility of flash flooding to low-lying and urban areas.
