A twin-engine Gulfstream AC95 crashed in the San Bernardino Mountains on Saturday evening, April 13, the Federal Aviation Administration announced.
It was not immediately known if anyone survived the plane crash in a “significant debris field” in the area north of Palm Avenue and Verdemont Drive, and east of Highway 215 and of Kendall Drive, said San Bernardino Police Sgt. » said Christopher Gray.
The accident occurred around 8:15 p.m. The search for survivors was hampered by rainy weather and difficult terrain.
It was unclear how many people were on the plane, where it was flying from or where it was heading.
The crash site is about a dozen miles northwest of San Bernardino International Airport, within the sheriff’s department’s jurisdiction, officials said Sunday.
“Last night, around 8:21 p.m., witnesses reported hearing an engine spit then an impact. A red flash was seen in the area. Our airship was unable to fly due to weather conditions,” Gloria Huerta, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, said in a statement Sunday morning.
Members of a search and rescue team were hoisted to the bottom of a mountain, she said, and were trying to descend to the debris field north of Devil Canyon.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, the FAA announced Sunday.
This is a developing story. More information will be added as it becomes available.
