Days after premiering on Netflix, season 2 of the immensely popular web series Squid Game found itself mired in controversy over the TV show’s portrayal of a crypto scammer.
The season 2 premiere of Squid Game on Netflix broke all previous viewership records by recording an impressive 68 million views in one week. While the well-written storyline and twists and turns kept viewers in suspense, one of the contestants, portrayed as a cryptocurrency project scammer, became the focal point of debates within the community.
Lee Myung-gi, a fictional character from Squid Game Season 2is shown as a YouTuber, who scammed his subscribers through his YouTube channel MG Coin, and later, also ended up losing his money. He is one of Squid Game’s competitors and has to face hostility from his competitors who were once his ardent fans and invested in his crypto project.

After joining Squid Game, Lee faces the consequences of his actions in the real world, as his fervent fans threaten him with losses. Not only that, he is also ignored and rejected by his girlfriend Kim Jun-hee.
The story may seem straight out of a movie script, but incidents like these continue to happen in the crypto space, such as when celebrities and influencers abuse the trust their fans place in them. The exact same thing happened with the Hawk Tuah Girl. She became popular, seized opportunities, and flipped a coin, leading to financial losses for many after her release.
