Sununu says he won’t go to Republican National Convention

The Republican National Convention is just over two weeks away, but one of the nation’s most popular Republican governors won’t be there. New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu said in an interview with “CloseUP” that he won’t go to the Milwaukee convention, but still plans to support former President Donald Trump. “It looks like a huge traffic jam,” Sununu said. “The convention is like the Super Bowl. It seems like a great idea to go, but it’s probably a lot nicer to be in the comfort of your own home. I’ll probably do some press and things around, but it’s like, in a small town like Milwaukee, I think it’s a logistical nightmare.” Sununu said his decision had nothing to do with the rift that opened up between him and Trump during the primaries, when the governor fought for his chosen Republican candidate, Nikki Haley. >> Download the free WMUR app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google Play <

The Republican National Convention is just over two weeks away, but one of the nation’s most popular Republican governors won’t be there.

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu said in an interview with “CloseUP” that he will not attend the convention in Milwaukee, but still plans to support former President Donald Trump.

“It seems like a huge traffic jam,” Sununu said. “The convention is like the Super Bowl. It seems like a great idea to go, but it’s probably a lot more enjoyable to be in the comfort of your own home. I’ll probably do some reporting and stuff around it, but it’s like in a small town like Milwaukee, I think it’s a logistical nightmare.”

Sununu said his decision had nothing to do with the rift that opened up between him and Trump during the primary, when the governor fought for his chosen Republican candidate, Nikki Haley.

He now supports Trump and has said he believes the former president will win in November.

“I had criticism of the former president. I stand by them all, actually,” Sununu said. “But ultimately it’s a matter of choice. And I think it’s pretty widely accepted that no one really likes the two candidates at the top. But people want change. They want it. You can’t tell people that the economy is doing well when they have record debt on their credit cards or that inflation is really crushing their family, that they can’t pay their rent, that sort of thing. . »

Some voters still find Sununu’s return to Trump incomprehensible. A recent poll from the University of New Hampshire Polling Center asked those who disapproved of the governor what decisions he made they disapproved of. His support for Trump clearly came out on top, with 28%.

“I’m a results guy,” Sununu said. “You can’t just talk about policies. You have to find someone who’s going to make things happen. If you stick with Joe Biden, then we’re literally going to have four more years of the same thing and beyond.”

Sununu conceded that there were still things he didn’t like about Trump.

“I’ve made a lot of statements that I stand by where I think character is an issue with him, of course,” Sununu said. “But at the end of the day, people have their own priorities.”
