How did Wordle start?
Wordle was originally a small family game created by software engineer Josh Wardle. He created this game so that he and his partner could play a fun little word game together during the pandemic, and they quickly realized there was something really special about this simple little guessing game. After some improvements, Wardle released it to the public on his website, Power Language.
The game was released in October 2021, and by the end of the year, the game had 2 million daily players. It’s such a hit thanks in large part to the ease with which players can share their results in a spoiler-free way on Twitter and other social media sites. In January 2022, Wardle accepted an offer from The New York Times to acquire Wordle for a seven-figure sum. Well done, Mr. Wardle. Well done indeed.
Are there any words that Wordle doesn’t allow?
You can enter almost any five-letter English word and Wordle will accept it as a guess. However, each day the answer is chosen from a smaller list of more common five-letter words. Of course, there are still thousands of possible answers, but that means the answer will never be as obscure a word as “THIOL,” “CAIRD,” or “MALIC” (yes, those are real words).
The New York Times occasionally chooses not to publish certain words as the day’s Wordle answer, perhaps for reasons related to recent news or politics. For example, shortly after news broke that Roe v. Wade might be overturned in the United States, the New York Times decided to change the wording on March 30 from “FETUS” to “SHINE” because of the feeling that the word “fetus” Too politically charged is a word to use in the context of recent events.
The New York Times has also been careful not to allow what it considers rude language to be the answer to the Wordle puzzle. Of course, there’s nothing stopping you from using even the dirtiest words as guesses, as long as they are accepted words in the dictionary, and as long as you realize that they will never be the answer.
Is Wordle too easy for you?
If Wordle starts to feel too easy, there are a few ways you can make the game more challenging for you. The first option is to turn on Hard Mode. You can do this on the Wordle website by clicking the gear icon in the upper right corner of the screen.Hard mode means any highlighted letter must for all future speculation. This prevents you from testing all five vowels early using the common strategy of choosing two words like “OUNCE” and “PAINS.”
You can take it to another level by following what we call “Super Hard” rules. This means that every guess you enter must may be the answer. If you’re just playing on hard mode and you type “MOIST” and the “O” is shown in yellow, there’s nothing stopping you from picking “POLAR” as your next word, even though it can’t possibly be the answer, because You already know the “O” is misplaced. This is not allowed if you follow the “super hard” rule. You must follow every clue and make sure every word you enter has a possible answer.
If Wordle is still too easy for you after all, you can always try one of the many other Wordle-inspired online games that have emerged in the last year. One of our favorite games is Worldle, where you have to guess which country in the world is based on shapes. There’s also Waffle, which swaps letters in a complete grid to complete all the words; and Moviedle, which shows you an entire movie in a fraction of the time and challenges you to guess the movie in six guesses. ; and Quordle, which tasks you with solving four Wordles simultaneously with the same guess.
