Tornadoes sweep across Tennessee, killing many: ‘A sad day for our community’

Severe tornadoes struck parts of Tennessee on Saturday, killing six people and injuring at least 36 others, officials said.

A tornado in Montgomery County, Tennessee, killed three people and injured 23 others, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said. Two adults and a child died, officials said.

Severe weather in Nashville killed three more people, the city’s emergency office said. Thirteen people were injured when a church building collapsed, the office said, adding that they were in stable condition.

Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden said, “This is a sad day for our community. We pray for those who are hurt, those who have lost loved ones, those who have lost their homes. This community is united like no other. Unanimously, we will be here until the very end,” it said in a statement.

Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts expressed his sympathy for the tragedy.

“This is devastating news and our hearts are broken for the families who have lost their loved ones. The city stands ready to assist them in their time of grief,” Pitts said in a statement.

Multiple long tornadoes were reported in northwest Tennessee Saturday afternoon, with a tornado threat continuing into the evening for the area.

Clarksville, about 48 miles northwest of Nashville, reported “extensive” damage after a tornado struck Saturday afternoon, police said.

Police are urging people to stay off the roads and crews are responding to multiple locations in northern Clarksville.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Saturday that “multiple homes were damaged” in Clarksville after a tornado struck the Hand Manor area, but there were “no confirmed injuries or missing persons.”

“This is the day no one wanted or expected,” Pitts said in a video message. “We know there has been widespread damage throughout the community.”

In the rural town of Dresden, multiple homes, power lines and trees were affected by the tornado, according to the town’s fire department.

The National Weather Service also issued a tornado emergency warning for several Nashville suburbs Saturday afternoon, including Hendersonville and Gallatin, due to a confirmed damaging tornado.

Severe thunderstorms capable of producing some tornadoes, scattered damaging winds and large hail are possible Saturday night from Louisiana to Kentucky.
