After nearly two decades as the midsize pickup truck market champion, the Toyota Tacoma is ready for its next chapter. This go-anywhere truck is entirely new for 2024 with epic adventures in mind, improving upon every winning aspect that has made it a stalwart for truck buyers for years, along with Toyota’s legendary quality, durability, reliability, and much more.

Toyota’s North American-based CALTY Design Center, located in Newport Beach, California, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, led the design efforts for the new Tacoma, as they did with the Tundra and Sequoia that launched last year.
“Our primary design goal for the all-new Tacoma was to be authentic to the way our customers use their trucks for rugged outdoor fun,” says Kevin Hunter, president of CALTY Design Research. “We looked at our truck DNA and the Toyota Baja race trucks for inspiration to capture the fierce spirit of offroad adventure. High lift, big tires, slim body, and a powerful athletic stance define the iconic Tacoma look, referred to as ‘Tacoma-ness.'”
The CALTY team of designers focused on the theme of a “Badass Adventure Machine” when defining the essence of the new Tacoma. This refers to Tacoma’s engineered toughness along with its athletic attitude. The design team strives for Toyota trucks to have a family resemblance, each with unique personalities defined by each one’s purpose. Tacoma’s narrow body and wide upper grille are a nod to the original HiLux, with features like the aggressive skid plates expressing the extreme ruggedness of Tacoma—other signature design elements.
Other signature design elements of the new Tacoma include bold fender flares, distinctive LED headlights, and a rugged hood scoop. The overall design exudes a sense of adventure and capability, showcasing its off-road prowess.
The development of the new Tacoma involved extensive engineering research and development conducted at Toyota Technical Centers. Engineers focused on enhancing the truck’s performance, durability, and overall driving experience. The goal was to create a vehicle that could handle terrain while providing maximum comfort and reliability.
Rugged Construction and Capability
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter is built on Toyota’s TNGA-F (Toyota New Global Architecture – Truck) platform. This platform provides a robust and rigid foundation, enhancing the truck’s durability and overall performance. High-strength steel and aluminum are used strategically throughout the vehicle’s construction to reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity.
One notable improvement in the new Tacoma is the introduction of a multi-link rear suspension. This suspension system improves ride comfort, handling, and stability on and off the road. It allows for better wheel articulation, ensuring the tires maintain contact with uneven surfaces and providing maximum traction and control.
Maximum Towing and Payload Capacity
The Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter offers impressive towing and payload capabilities. The detailed ratings may vary depending on the specific grade and configuration, but the Tacoma is designed to handle demanding tasks. It features a robust frame and towing equipment, including a trailer brake controller and a backup guide system, making towing safer and more convenient.
In addition to towing capabilities, the Tacoma offers a spacious and versatile bed with increased volume compared to its predecessors. The bed includes valuable features such as adjustable tie-down cleats, a 120V power outlet, and an available bed utility bar for securing cargo. Whether hauling equipment for a camping trip or transporting materials for a DIY project, the Tacoma is up to the task.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter introduces two new turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain options. These engines balance power and efficiency, catering to different driving preferences and needs. The exact specifications of the engines may vary, but they are designed to deliver robust performance and enhanced fuel economy.
For those who prefer a more engaging driving experience, the Tacoma Trailhunter also offers a six-speed intelligent manual transmission. This transmission provides precise gear changes and fully immerses drivers in the driving experience.

Furthermore, Toyota is introducing the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain to the Tacoma lineup. This hybrid system combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor to enhance efficiency while maintaining the truck’s capability and performance.
The Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter has always been known for its off-road capability, and the 2024 model takes it to new heights. It has features and technologies that prepare it for any off-road adventure.
One notable feature is the front stabilizer bar disconnect, which increases wheel articulation and improves suspension travel in challenging off-road situations. This feature enhances the truck’s ability to conquer obstacles and navigate uneven terrain.
The Tacoma Trailhunter offers advanced off-road technologies such as Multi-Terrain Select and CRAWL Control. Multi-Terrain Select allows the driver to choose different drive modes to optimize traction and control based on the terrain conditions. CRAWL Control automatically adjusts the throttle and brakes to maintain a consistent and controlled speed when navigating rugged off-road terrain.
Additionally, the Tacoma Trailhunter has an electronically activated locking rear differential. This feature enhances traction by distributing power evenly to both rear wheels, maximizing grip in challenging off-road situations.
Introduction of the Trailhunter Grade
Toyota has collaborated with ARB, a renowned manufacturer of off-road accessories, to create the all-new Trailhunter grade. The Trailhunter grade takes Tacoma’s off-road capability to the next level with a range of purpose-built features and equipment.
The Trailhunter grade features an exclusive front bumper with an integrated winch, providing increased recovery options and protection. It also includes rock rails, skid plates, and a snorkel to enhance off-road durability and capability further.
Inside the cabin, the Trailhunter grade boasts unique interior accents and upholstery, emphasizing its rugged and adventurous character. The seats are designed to provide excellent support during off-road maneuvers while maintaining comfort for long journeys.
Advanced Safety and Technology
The 2024 Tacoma Trailhunter prioritizes safety by including Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) as standard equipment. TSS is a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems designed to help prevent accidents and mitigate potential hazards. It includes pre-collision braking, lane departure alert, and adaptive cruise control.
The Tacoma Trailhunter also incorporates the latest technology and connectivity features. It offers an upgraded infotainment system with a large touchscreen display, smartphone integration, and a premium audio system. Additionally, it includes advanced navigation capabilities and a suite of apps to enhance the overall driving experience.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter represents a significant evolution of the iconic midsize pickup truck. With its rugged design, enhanced capabilities, and advanced features, it is poised to conquer the trails and the daily commute. Whether you seek off-road adventures or require a reliable and capable work truck, the Tacoma Trailhunter is designed to meet your needs and exceed expectations.
