Naya Tapper and the U.S. women’s rugby team faced Japan and Brazil in the Sevens on Sunday.
PARIS, France — Naya Tapper, a graduate of West Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, and the United States women’s rugby team beat Japan and Brazil on Sunday.
Tapper was an All-American track star at West Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, but discovered rugby at the University of North Carolina, where she joined a club team on campus.
She joined the U.S. Women’s Sevens team in 2016. Her rare combination of speed and power made her one of the best players in team history and earned her a debut at the Tokyo Olympics.

She is co-captain of the team at the 2024 Olympics, where they faced Japan and Brazil.
On Sunday morning, she Japan dominated the tournament 36-7. The team played again at 2 p.m., beating Brazil 24-5. The quarterfinals begin Monday at 3 p.m. on E!
