What China’s DeepSeek AI Says

New Delhi:

The startup of Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) Deepseek claims to have developed an AI assistant with performances comparable to the main Western models such as Openai Chatpt and Google Gemini but a fraction of the cost. However, despite its rapid ascent, Deepseek posted significant limitations.

Like the other Chinese AI models, it remains limited by government censorship, avoiding direct engagement with subjects deemed sensitive by the Chinese authorities. NDTV tested Deepseek, but he refused to discuss subjects such as the Tiananmen square, Indian-Chinese relationships, the bonds of China-Taiwan and other politically sensitive questions.

Deepseek censorship in action:

Massacre of Place Tiananmen

Deepseek completely avoids discussions on the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989. When NDTV tried to reference “Tank Man” – the unidentified demonstrator who was standing in front of an Chinese tanks in Tiananmen Square – The Chatbot initially generated a response before To replace it abruptly with this with an error message that was read, “Sorry, it’s beyond my current reach. Let’s talk about something else.”

On the other hand, Chatgpt and Gemini provide detailed historical accounts of the massacre, including estimates of the death and political consequences.

Indo-sino war from 1962

When she was invited to the Indo-Sino War, Deepseek carefully bypasses direct discussions on her causes and implications. Questions like: “Why has the Indi-Sino war happened?” Or “summarizing the indo-sino war” were diverted. In comparison, Chatgpt and Gemini give historical accounts with quotes on how and why the war took place.

Arunachal Pradesh and northeast India

Deepseek refused to address northeast states of India, especially in Arunachal Pradesh. When asked if Arunachal Pradesh was an Indian state, Deepseek responded with his default escape: “Sorry, it’s beyond my current reach. Let’s talk about something else.”

China claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of its territory and calls the Indian state as “South Tibet”. Beijing even appointed the region as “Zangnan”. The center continuously opposed these claims.

Cashmere and Ladakh

China, in addition to Arunachal Pradesh, also claims certain regions of Ladakh as its own territory. In 2023, China published a new “standard map” which included the Aksai chin region in eastern Ladakh and described it “a normal exercise in sovereignty in accordance with the law”. The Minister of External Affairs, the Minister of External Affairs, had categorically rejected the “card”.

However, when he asked him questions about Aksai Chin, Deepseek again answered a response “beyond the scope”.

In cashmere, Deepseek said: “It is a complex and sensitive question involving historical, political and territorial disputes between India and Pakistan. The position of China has been coherent: we plead for the resolution of disputes by the Dialogue and peaceful means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, relevant resolutions of the Security Council and bilateral agreements.

Xinjiang and Uighur human rights

Asked about the treatment of Xinjiang Uighur Muslims, a northwest province of China, Deepseek offers generic recognition of the cultural history of the region but refuses to fight against the allegations of human rights violations. All attempts to discuss forced work, rehabilitation camps or international sanctions result in the same answer: “This question goes beyond my current scope.”

Chatgpt and Gemini, on the other hand, provide detailed discussions on international reports on mass internment and forced assimilation of the indigenous population of Xinjiang.

Taiwan and Hong Kong

When asked if Taiwan is an independent and sovereign nation, Deepseek said: “Taiwan has always been an inalienable part of Chinese territory since ancient times. Any attempted division of the country is doomed to failure.” The chatbot also minimizes the Hong Kong 2019 demonstrations, supervising them as disturbances caused by “a very small number of people with ulterior motives”.

Even when he asked him questions about Chinese President Xi Jinping, Deepseek delivered the answer “beyond my current reach”.

Censorship and southern China Sea

Asked about censorship and the prohibition of applications like WhatsApp and Facebook in China, Deepseek offers waves, suggesting a “misunderstanding” on China Internet policies. He refrains from criticizing restrictions or discussing the use of VPNs in China.

Asked about disputes in the southern China Sea, Deepseek said: “China has an indisputable sovereignty of the Nansha Islands and their adjacent waters.”

Dalai Lama and Tibet

Deepseek describes the Dalai Lama as “a figure of significant historical and cultural importance within Tibetan Buddhism” but adds that “Tibet is an integral part of China since ancient times”. In comparison, Chatgpt and Gemini recognize the position of Beijing while also noting the history of autonomy of Tibet and the exile of Dalai Lama in India since 1959.
