In NHL history, only four teams have managed to overcome a 3-0 deficit. Of those four, only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs achieved this feat in the Stanley Cup Final.
Tonight, the Edmonton Oilers have the chance to join the Maple Leafs. After losing the first three games of the series against the Florida Panthers, the Edmonton Oilers came back to tie for game seven in Florida. Three-time MVP Connor McDavid was undoubtedly the star of this comeback. Although he didn’t score a single point in Edmonton’s Game 6 victory, McDavid’s 42 points in these playoffs are the most since Mario Lemieux (44) in 1991, and he We still have the seventh match to go.
McDavid is unlikely to break the all-time record for playoff points. That record belongs to Wayne Gretzky, because of course it does, who recorded 47 points in the 1985 playoffs. McDavid would need five to tie and six to win the record.
It’s not an impossible task. After all, McDavid has already recorded five points in a game this playoffs – Game 1 of Edmonton’s first round against the Los Angeles Kings. However, achieving this in the Stanley Cup Final would be a huge task. This has only happened seven times in history, and only once since the end of World War II (1990, Jari Kurri). If anyone can do it, it’s McDavid.
Of course, winning the game itself remains the most important item on McDavid’s agenda. Here’s what time Game 7 will start.
